The Program met and reviewed the presentation made to the County on Tuesday, February 9th, 2016.

With the opening of the new Escambia Community Clinic on Jackson St. in Brownsville it was agreed there wasn’t a current need for medical programs for the Community Center

With the construction of Brownsville Manor an Affordable Seniors Housing Building at W St. and Desoto St. there wasn’t a current need for Seniors Care programming for the community center.

It was agreed that:
* The existing facility can accommodate all proposed programs
* Rooms can be multi use
* Three separate areas can be made independently secure.
* 2nd Floor – Adults
* 1st Floor – Children & Family
* Gym – Theater – Sports – Performing Arts
* There is still a need for an acoustic study to be undertaken in the gymnasium.
* That under balcony can be framed in additional rooms as needed
* That the County approve the program committee of the Brownsville Neighborhood Association be authorized to determine programming for the community center
* That the county pay for one staff person to help coordinate the programming.
* That the county allow for Brownsville Neighborhood Association to designate approved and screened personnel to operate the community center in addition to the one county staff person
* That the county receives and approves annually an amount for FFE for the Community Center.
* The following are priorities of programs for the community center and the person to bring recommendations to the program committee.

  • Sports & Fitness – Evon Horton agreed to work on an action plan with Coach James Rich
  • Adult, Youth, Children
  • Classes
  • Intra Mural Teams
  • Evon Horton agreed to work on an action plan.

  • Arts – Hoping that Michael Jackson & Mike Kilmer would work on an action plan with Leroy Williams

  • Theater Production
  • Classes
  • Fine Arts Room – Pottery, painting, etc.
  • Recording Studio

  • Children & Family Needs – Phyllis Gonzales agreed to work on an action plan with Sean Salameda of Families 1st Network.

  • Tutoring
  • Afterschool Program
  • Family & Parent Counseling
  • AA, Alanon, NA
  • Teen moms- Parenting infants
  • Substance Abuse Prevention activities
  • Pop up community awareness – as to Mental Health, violence and Substance Misuse issues.
  • Playrooms for Parents

  • Adult Education – There is a need for someone to assist in developing this program

  • GED Tutoring
  • Computers
  • Financial Tutoring
  • Literacy
  • Trade Education

  • Library – Mike Kilmer reported that Todd Humble and the Escambia County Library Association will be placing a $60,000 automated library in the community center.
